Palm fronds and swamp water, layered into one image
Crazy Emu starts with a photograph of a palm, mirrored four times until its fronds form a symmetrical pattern. Over it, Madlen Duderstedt layered a second photograph from Kemeri National Park near Riga, Latvia, taken on a boardwalk through the wetlands in early 2024: clear water with branches lying beneath the surface, glowing reddish against the blue.
On its own, the swamp shot is quiet, almost unremarkable. Layered over the palms, it changes everything: the shapes stay perfectly symmetrical, but the colours don’t. That small break is what keeps the eye moving.
Portrait or landscape
Crazy Emu works both ways – hang it upright, or turn it on its side for a wide, landscape view.
