A volcanic lake, folded into order
High on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in New Zealand’s North Island, the Emerald Lakes sit in old explosion craters. Minerals washed from the volcanic rock turn them green and turquoise, glowing against dark, ash-covered ground.
Harmony began as a single photograph of one of these lakes. Madlen Duderstedt mirrored it vertically, then mirrored the result once more horizontally. A raw volcanic landscape turns into a calm geometric pattern: clear lines, balanced shapes, nothing out of place.
The order in nature
Nature is full of hidden geometry, from the spiral of a fern to the symmetry of a leaf. Harmony brings that order to the surface. It is a quiet piece to look at, and it brings a sense of calm to a room.
