Body of Nature – Where Body Meets Landscape

Body of Nature – Where Body Meets Landscape

Body of Nature has been shown twice in Berlin. It was first shown in 2025 as part of my solo exhibition Between Realities at 180° Café (27 August – 12 October). From 3 January to 22 February 2026 it had a solo show of its own at Fincan Neukölln. Thank you to everyone who came by.

Body of Nature started with one thought: I don't stand in front of the landscape. I'm part of it.

At the edge of skin and earth

The series has five self-portraits. Each one is a digital double exposure: one of my own landscape photographs from New Zealand or Portugal, layered with a photograph of my body. Skin blends into sand, water, leaves, sky. Four images follow the classical elements: Fire, Water, Earth and Air. The fifth, Ether, is the space that holds them all.

Fire

The sand in Fire comes from the Te Paki Giant Sand Dunes in Northland, far up at the top of New Zealand's North Island. Where my skin and the dune overlap, it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

Water

For Water I used waves I photographed at Nazaré in Portugal, one of the wildest stretches of the Atlantic coast. The movement of the water runs straight through the body.

Earth

Earth is a fern I photographed in New Zealand. Its fronds unroll the way a body unfolds, slowly and from the inside out.

Air

The clouds in Air drifted over Lake Tekapo. Light, open and always changing, they're the closest thing to what breathing feels like.

Ether

Ether was taken at night at Lake Tekapo, inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, one of the darkest skies on earth. I layered two starry skies and two self-portraits. Where the two figures overlap, a shadow appears, like a body dissolving into space.

Where boundaries dissolve

Body of Nature is less about depicting nature and more about sensing connection. The series moves between closeness and dissolving, between tenderness and vastness. Making these images, I kept coming back to a feeling I had on my travels: we're not separate from nature, we're made of the same things. Sand, water, plants, air, light.

You can see the whole series on my portfolio: Body of Nature.
